Doin’ it for the KIDS

When advising on marketing planning and tactics, I’ve always felt uncomfortable with the “K.I.S.S.” description (Keep It Simple, Stupid). While I subscribe to the concept, it can be odd telling someone to ‘kiss’ and I would never call anyone stupid.

It occurred to me the other day that there’s an alternative to this.  Apologies if this isn’t an original idea (how many are?), but it struck me that children often simplify things in a way we sophisticated grown-ups don’t, because we allegedly know more and we’re far too clever for childish things like just asking “why” (even 5 times).

But I am a fan of taking the smoke & mirrors, or dark art out of marketing strategy and social media planning; so clarity and simplicity have to reign supreme.

So, instead of the patronising and awkward “K.I.S.S.”, what if we decided instead to:


I just find it a useful reminder sometimes when trying to navigate complex, multi-layered issues – especially where there’s a hint of rogue culture muddying the pond.

It’s not a solution, but it is a facilitator, and a way of doing or approaching things.  I often need to remind myself and this is the easiest way I’ve found.  It’s child’s play, really.
